I tested it this morning and it works for w2k. Will not be able to really play for a few days but certainly it opened and drew some scribs and the buttons that I tried worked. Great news.

I am on w2k, and when I tried the build, I still have the issue of invisible text elements. They are there all right. I can select them and change properties etc., just not visible.
Am I the only one facing this issue. NOTE: This is the case with my self builds as well as the one building by Bob.

You are not the only one. Text is invisible or not working for me too. I had not tested it this morning but have now, and it is as you say.

I do not claim to understand the code, but could this be due to the relatively new 'kerning' stuff? Try this out. Select one or more text entities and open the properties dialog for text. In that, change the orientation to be vertical. Do you see your text now? I think you would :) It has been like that for around 10 days now.

Yes the text appears on the canvas but all superimposed on one space. It is correct on the text dialog preview.
The same happens if you set the orientation to vertical in the text dialog and make that the default setting. Then you can type and the text appears and superimposes on the canvas.

You might look in the Messages window to see if there are any warnings. Maybe Pango is missing something?

As far as I can see there are no messages coming up in the Messages window.
A question.
Do I need the gtk24.zip file if I am using the InkscapeXXX.zip files, and not compiling my own at this stage?

No. You need the gtk24.zip only if you want to do a build. The distribution (inkscape*.zip) file contains all the relevant files to "use" the application.
