I don't know if everyone saw my recent blog entry on XCF: http://blogs.gnome.org/view/bolsh/2006/06/19/0

Through that I found Henning Makholm's xcftools at http://henning.makholm.net/software - he has abstracted away the GIMP, and coded a decent png/pnm export filter for XCF which takes into account layer masks and layer modes. You can also extract individual layers with it.

It would be really cool to have this encapsulated in a nice simple API for getting layers from an XCF - and I thought it might benefit ye (since ye're doing XCF support) to have a look at the programs.
