Inkscape 0.46 About Screen Contest - Developer choosing time
Hello all!
Community voting results for the about screen contest:
http://inkscapers.deviantart.com/journal/16414256/
As it goes, the developers are now choosing from the top 3 to decide which one best fits the upcoming release. If you click on the thumbnails of the about screens, on the page you are then taken to, there is a download link on the left to obtain the SVG files. Since I know that would be everyone's first question. ;)
I imagine the decision can be made in 3 days so we can then request/discuss/make tweaks shortly thereafter.
Cheers, Josh

1 vote for #1 by needcoffee, if my vote counts (don't know how you count who is a dev or not)

devs are counted as people who are listed in AUTHORS.

OK, so discard my vote, I'm not in (too bad I really like the one by needcoffee ;) )

Count mine instead. I like it very much, too. :)

Question: how easy would it be (for that extra level of polish) to take the winning about screen, and make a version of it which is seen along the headline of the Windows installer. Is that easily possible? Also, is there a place for such branding in the Mac installer as well?

There's actually no "installer" for Inkscape on the mac. There's just a disk image, which is opened and presents a window containing Inkscape application. One only has to copy it to his/her harddrive to "install" it (modulo some details it could even run directly from said disk image). We control the appearance of the window[1] so we could put the About screen as the background, or somewhere in the background. But I'm not sure how good it will look. It'll probably add much clutter to and otherwise simple process. Plus the user only sees this window for very little time: the window opens, one drags Inkscape to the desktop and then closes the window. It can last as little as 2-3 seconds.
[1] it looks like this currently: http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape-mac.png

Apropos Mac, Jimmac made a nice highres icon: http://jimmac.musichall.cz/log/?p=406

If you have done enough to get SVN access then I'd have thought you should be in there...

jiho, due to the huge amount of work you've done on the Mac port I don't think there's any question you should be listed in AUTHORS, and I've added you. :-)

Oh, cool. Thanks ;)
My highest hope is actually that most this work is thrown away when we get a native build (which may happen soon!) but this was a reason enough to have done it.
BTW I've had news from Michael Wybrow who will be coming back to Inkscape soon (now that he's finished with his PhD and has gotten married), right on time for me to crawl in my cave and actually write my own PhD thesis, so that's great news for Inkscape on the Mac.

I wonder if that also means mating Inkscape with http://sourceforge.net/projects/adaptagrams/ :)
(now that he's finished with his PhD and has gotten married)

Just a reminder, if you haven't chimed in yet and have a vote that differs from the majority #1, now is the time to speak up. I will announce the chosen about screen mid-day tomorrow.

even knowing that #1 uses the 3d tool, I really like more the #2. It has at my opinion a greater visual impact.
so... my vote goes to #2 by ~dnfjud

Er, please vote regardless.
(If people do not vote because they favor the majority opinion, then it may become not the majority opinion after all.)

Hey All,
As the subject says, we have a winner! With a majority vote: http://needcoffee.deviantart.com/art/Inkscape-0-46-About-Screen-73478652
Congratulations needcoffee! (that's his nickname, not me trying to be funny)
We do want to thank all who participated in the contest. Whether you created entries for it, voted, or just sat back and watched it all unfold, thanks for your participation! We look forward to seeing what people do next time around.
Speaking of next time around... watch out for another announcement shortly. ;-)
