Indeed, it should be indicated somewhere which snap mode is active. I'd prefer to go the status bar route though, because I don't think it's important enough to display it near the cursor.
But it would be nice to temporary show next to the cursor what type of snap happened! ;)

Even on a medium size monitor I may be drawing 30 cm away from the status bar. Looking back and forth almost inevitably means moving the mouse slightly which in congested areas, where this would be most useful, is likely to change the snap target.

The status bar should only show which snap mode is active, whereas near the cursor it would show what has snapped. The status bar is then kinda static, whereas what has snapped might change frequently. Have you seen the post-snapping indicator yet? It draws a small cross where snapping occured. We could change that cross into any other symbol, depending on what has snapped.
That makes sense. I was confused and thought showing "what has snapped" in the status bar was being advocated, rather than which mode/ modes were active.
BTW, I really like the post-snapping indicator, although it doesn't seem to be working in my current build. I seem to vaguely recall it got turned off recently because it was still buggy?
