Hi list, In August last year (08/2004) we had a small thread in this list discussing new ways of making the translation process of the tutorials in svg format easier. TMX and XLIFF formats were mentioned and I remember talking about not having tools for these formats.
A few days ago I read about the freedesktop.org XLIFF tools project: http://xliff-tools.freedesktop.org/wiki/ and googling a bit for "xml to xliff" conversion tools I found several initiatives (this one very nicely illustrated http://infomanagementcenter.com/pdfs/translation_wxml_tools.pdf).
Question: Can we make use of these technologies for svg files? I suppose that because svg is a subset of xml we shouldn't have big trouble, should we?

Well... there might have been some talk of tools, but in my mind that would be a very minor concern.
Though there are a plethora of XLIFF tools, as a format I think it's much less suited to our needs. One of the main issues is that while TMX stores multiple language versions in one file, XLIFF is meant to just carry things from one stage in a tool pipeline to another, and only is meant for a single source and a single target language.
One thing we would look at would be XSLT to strip a 'full' version with many languages down to a single language when loading for a user. Another approach is to use <switch> to display language-appropriate info.
Now that some base work is in, and that some new behind-the-scenes stuff is right around the corner, it's probably time to take a look and start implementing more of this.

I remember someone telling me that in the future docs will be authored in DocBook/XML (or Simplified DocBook/XML) and then translated to SVG via XSLT. It is a good idea, because translators can use xml2pot/pot2xml tools to edit/update translations in GTranslator/KBabel/poEdit.

the ninjas at redhat use these .po file thingys to replace strings of text in xml files for translation ( asia pacific are currently doing that with scribus sla files ). its trendy.. so lets do it for inkscape tutorials

That was me. I mean to do it but I just don't have time for everything :(
