Dear developers,
The about screen contest for 0.92 is complete and we have our three runner ups for us developers to choose from:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=about-screen-contest/contest-for-092+0 /
Each of the three are marked as "Next Round", please email to the mailing list with your choices. Simply put your numbers in order of preference, so 3214 would mean 3 is my first choice, 2 is my second choice etc. You don't have to rank all numbers if you don't want to.
You'll notice that I've chosen 4 items, this is because 1 and 3 are so similar and I wanted to give us a better choice.
Thanks to all our artists and voters, I think this round has been really good.
I actually voted for "Ngarai Sianok" and a lot of people loved "Freedom Machine" (see comments on those items). So I'll be adding a few of these to the website front page when 0.92 is released, to replace the current set of images.
Best Regards, Martin Owens

Terribly there’ll be only three winners. Sober pictures are apparently the most convincing. My order is: 3124 ‘1’ should have the Inkscape logo moved front (with no ray on it). But I’m not even sure I’m considered to be an ‘Inkscape developer’; was mainly a translator until then (and website developer).

We could think about showing a random picture on the About screen, a gallery or a picture depending on the season of the year (like VLC and its Xmas hat). Well, all these are actually already visible in this gallery. A link from the About splash to the gallery would do the trick too.

I actually voted for 2 in the first round, but now I prefer the clean look of 4 ("2" is kinda busy with the large shape and the additional gleam from the top). Still love the colors of 2, though (I'm more of a blueish guy, and not so much into reddish tones ;-) ).
I hope we won't alter the outcome of the vote by including the two very similar designs. I guess people who like one of them basically like both and now we're going to split some votes between them.
Regards, Eduard
P.S. I also really liked "Inkscape Hill" (woul've been my second choice). Will be hard to decide what to show on the website. Maybe we can have them all as a slide-show on the frontpage?

usually, votign methods that take a preference list, like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting , are designed to prevent that problem.

I know inky isn't a blessed mascot, but she's used a number of times on the website, for example:
https://inkscape.org/en/*users/chat/?tutorial=1
(inky is the ink blob, not the girl reading)
Better drawings, always good.
Best Regards, Martin Owens
Well, maybe Inky could be enhanced, somehow? I like the concept of the ink drop (although at first, I thought it was a rock @@) (I'm kind of slow like that, as if no one has noticed, lol.), and would love to see different ideas about the graphical representation of Inky.
But I was just saying that other artists should have a shot at creating a mascot, including other branding features (which I assume we'll get around to by version 1.0), and that it should perhaps be a community-wide search, instead of focusing on one drawing (awesome though it may be).

Daw, thanks for the mention, Jabier! That would be the inkdrop animation I never got around to encorporating in the video. It's here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zx9b7m59xa4yi8g/inkscape_intro_animation_wip_3.ogv...
Sound effects to follow once I get time again (future).
I'm not sure this animation qualifies as a "mascot", but I think Martin showed me inky after the fact... so maybe that's two kinda/sorta votes for an inkdrop mascot? :) I mean "freedom machine" is fun... but could represent any FOSS software project (or any computer running Linux or OpenBSD). Inky is kinda uniquely ours, imho. I'm sure variations would be welcome, and I'd sure like to see what the community has to say about it (if I get a vote) :)

Inky is so cute! Or should it be called Inkdrop?
Agreed. I like Martin's version that's like a little animal/cat or something. But maybe that's just me liking cats. ;P I'll do some variations, I'm sure Martin and I could work up some dynamic versions too.
I'd love to see this idea revised, polished and incorporated into the official branding. We should have something like your video coded into an SVG animation and put on the website. I can help with that once I clear out my current plate.
Sure. I'll do some story-boards for the animation over the holiday season. When you're ready, just give me a nudge. :) My initial idea was to have inky be a polymorph that can be cute and cuddly but also a bad-ass when necessary, transforming into the most useful tool for the task at hand. This provides a rich ground for animations, which we could incorporate into our "official" videos.
Inky helps you get the job done. :)
I like "Inky", Could go Inky Inkdrop, for a "bugs bunny" "micky mouse" "[name] [what-it-is]" first-name, last name soft of deal that has worked well in cartoons since the dawn of animation. :)

Dear developers,
The about screen contest for 0.92 is complete and we have our three runner ups for us developers to choose from:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=about-screen-contest/contest-for-0 92+0 /
Each of the three are marked as "Next Round", please email to the mailing list with your choices.

Hmm, this has potential problems. The affect is achieved by blurring the original, and adjusting the contrast of the result. This means we would lose all inky's body-details. Maybe not a deal breaker, but I wonder if it wouldn't be easier just to animate it by hand.

Heheh, awesome effects! Though I think Inky probably needs a bit less mitosis and a bit more anthropomorphism to be relate-able as a mascot. This could be a great way to transition effect text for titles though.

First is like a droplet sitting on some non-porous surface, and the other, well, is obvious. Maybe the 2nd one could morph into the first one -- like the droplet is falling until it hits the surface. And I can see it sort of bouncing - not like bouncing up off of the surface but just....well, I wish I could make an animation. It would take me hours. Maybe I'll try it after I finish my other work.
Anyway, just to share some ideas. I don't expect I could make a very high quality animation.

Nice work. I'll have a go at it soon as well. I can produce high quality 2D animation using synfig. There well be a lot of character development involved in inky beforehand though, so these are great first steps. :) W hen I get around to doing inky's expressions, we will have a nice emoji/sticker set for inky as well. :D

Dear developers,
The about screen contest for 0.92 is complete and we have our three runner ups for us developers to choose from:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=about-screen-contest/contest-for-0 92+0 /
Each of the three are marked as "Next Round", please email to the mailing list with your choices.

Wow, it sounds amazing! It will be fun to help with the character development.
I'd like to try and involve forum members in the process, if possible. It may be that they don't want to be involved (some of them), and I may be eternal optimist. But if by "emoji" you mean old fashioned smileys, perhaps they might have some interest.
Should we have these discussions in the LP Inkscape-web account? I guess the mailing list really is the best suited for that kind of discussion.
Do you have some time frame in mind for this? I guess I could just cross post from list to forum. And if anyone is interested, from forum back to list. (Probably the forum and the mailing lists are almost mutually exclusive user bases. But for now, I'll try to bring more together.)

Nice work. I'll have a go at it soon as well. I can produce high quality 2D animation using synfig. There well be a lot of character development involved in inky beforehand though, so these are great first steps. :) W hen I get around to doing inky's expressions, we will have a nice emoji/sticker set for inky as well. :D

Hey, maybe we should use SMIL?? Just like we need to show gradient mesh in use around the internet, it seems like SMIL is in the same boat.

As I'm constantly having to judge from the content of messages in this list, whether I actually am a "developer" or not, whether I need to read or reply to any given message, I had forgotten that I'm allowed to vote. So apologies for the late vote.

With #4 (my first place vote), I would suggest taking the gradient off of the text and logo which lie in that white bar across the middle? Maybe use the official font on Draw Freely? But even with no change, still my first place vote.
Congratulations to all 4 who made the cut (well, 3 artists)!!

An official mascot as part of our legal branding is not a bad idea at all. Someone please bring a proposal to one of our board meetings and we can get the ball rolling.

TimeWaster -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [Inkscape-devel] Contest Results and Developer Voting Date: 20.11.2016 02:36 From: Martin Owens <doctormo@...400...> To: inkscape-devel <inkscape-devel@lists.sourceforge.net> Dear developers, The about screen contest for 0.92 is complete and we have our three runner ups for us developers to choose from: https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=about-screen-contest/contest-for-0 92+0 / Each of the three are marked as "Next Round", please email to the mailing list with your choices. The webpage shows 2 & 4 as the similar ones? That page has loaded 2 different orders when I've hit refresh. Can we have a written list of which one is which number please.

I was honestly surprised that neither "Ngarai Sianok" or "Freedom Machine" machine made it into the finalists... goes to show that I made bad guesses about two votes this year. :-/

The space design was at top right position for me - so I numbered it 2 by left to right reading rule, not 1 as Kris.

Can someone provide a tutorial for how to make the effect in #2 and #4. I really like them, but my first question would be "how do you do that in Inkscape"?
I feel #3 most represents both the idea of "drawing freely", and the core of what Inkscape is good at doing in the way of illustration at this point in time.
Graphically, the others are great though too. :) My 2p.

Can someone provide a tutorial for how to make the effect in #2 and #4. I really like them, but my first question would be "how do you do that in Inkscape"?
- You can download the files ;-) and dissect them to find the
'Interpolate Subpaths' LPE. If you need more info, you can also ask the artist for a tutorial in a comment.

I feel #3 most represents both the idea of "drawing freely", and the core of what Inkscape is good at doing in the way of illustration at this point in time.
Graphically, the others are great though too. :) My 2p.

thanks for the screenshot, that clarifies things a lot. I'm on Win 10, using IE11. The page I get is inconsistent with your screenshot, so I assume my page is wrong. On my computer the second row of images is shown as being the winners, but I won't attach a screenshot for fear of confusing the issue.

Alvin or Jabier, could you please post a screenshot (which also shows the url) on a bug report on inkscape-web on launchpad? We need to investigate.
I've already tried if it makes a difference if I'm logged in or not, but there isn't one. Browser and system also shouldn't make a difference, unless it's a client-side caching thing...

I've cleaned the issue.
sorry everyone, the 1st and 2nd entries had exactly the same number of votes (21), so the db order was basically random depending on which website thread you hit.
I've bumped the space one to 23 votes so it'll stay 1st and we can follow Maren's screenshot for the vote here.
