Inkscape Website Re-design Contest - Submissions
Developers,
Well, there were a total of 3 entries for the website re-design contest. They are as follows:
http://ciberirmandade.org/gatonegro/var/inkweb/ http://gri3fon.95mb.com/scappy/ http://www.deviantart.com/view/22467478/
I figured we could forgo a community vote given the already limited number of selections. Please review each of these and only concentrate on the visual (and usability) aspects at the moment. We can have whomever the winner is (if we decide to use one of the new designs) put more time into it after the fact.
My guess is we should vote on a first choice since the selection is so limited.

That's my vote... (with a full menu though instead of the drop downs)

Also probably worth mentioning that folks can also vote for the forth option of "no change".

Can you have the artist of this one do a version without relying on popups so we can see what it'd look like?

http://ciberirmandade.org/gatonegro/var/inkweb/ gets my vote. Great looking site, love the elegance of it.

I like the first but would much prefer it if it didn't use the iframe-type effect. For instance, what happens when more nav links need to be added? Also there is visually nothing telling me that the nav links are links. Apart from that I think it's quite elegant and clean.

This one has its own scroll bar. I cannot start to tell you why this is evil
This one grabbed me. It gets my vote.
Maybe in a different colour.

I think it's a beautiful print design, but lacks somewhat for web interactivity.
This one's not too bad, there are just some technical issues that need correcting (like the lack of resizing).
This one really hit me as very good.
I wasn't sure why. And then the base color itself is so-so. However, the artist managed to get that "bad" color to look good. Also I think it presents just enough information to carry forth the site usability, but not too much to confuse things. The simple use of depth also made things "feel" touchable.
I also looked into some of the feedback and tried it with different colors. I just did some quick hue shifting in Gimp, but it seemed to do well in most colors I tried (maybe 2/3rds+).
Blue, Cyan, Green and Purples looked very nice. And given the UI mockup's "color" dropdown, I think allowing for that was the creator's intent.
So.. this last one strikes me as a very good choice, and more from the subtle usability aspects.

This one is the best of the three. The actual code may require some tweaking (e.g. for dealing with different display sizes), but the fundamental design is good.

I agree with Mental. Of the 3 that we have, this one is the least bad. But it's too boxy and cramped, I would like to see it simplified and made less noisy. Also:
- the tag line is not anywhere
- the translations links may be more prominent
- the "INKSCAPE" font is different from our standard
- the second semi-transparent mountain under the logo looks very unconvincing
- the design becomes partially unreadable when I make the font size too big (this is a problem with many sites, but still)
http://ciberirmandade.org/gatonegro/var/inkweb/ - this one has nice aspects (I like b/w), but overstretching the mountain looks too artificial, and cramping it all into a small scrolled box is very bad usability.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/22467478/ - this one I don't like at all.
With this in mind, I would like to propose to prolong the contest to see more entries. Also I think we should lower the barrier of entry by only requiring a mock-up image, not a complete HTML page, as the first stage. I think this will motivate more people to participate, because the complete HTML/CSS coding, without knowing for sure that your design will be used, is a big hassle.

I agree completely that it should be rerun with a lower barrier.
I'm not thrilled by any of the designs. Plus, I think that our new site design should be good enough to take over as our project's look and feel -- especially now that we are growing at such a rapid place.
There is no reason IMHO for us to have to change it right now if we are not satisifed.

Agreed. HTML/CSS is a technical aspect we can deal with, but the main thing at the moment is getting some good mockups.

Alright... contest extended to Oct 31 and rules changed to be the only thing needed to submit an entry is a mockup as opposed to markup. ;)

I absolutely *hate* this, it reminds me of bad Flash sites. And the content flow badly with my display dpi settings.
Almost passable but it waste a lot of horizontal space. And as bulia said, is too boxy.
I don't like the red color at all. A more conservative color and the page may be OK. Have you seen the scrollbar on the left? Yuck!

Yeah, the scrollbar does have to go.

Scriptina-like fonts are difficult to read. The mockup is beautiful to look at, but not really easy to read.
Looks good, except left border of search entry field should sahre the same vertical alignment with "archives" cell's left border.
Looks good and modern, but default color scheme is somewhat girlish (don't get me wrong ;)) The same one with black/white/grey/blue (the blue from footnote <div/> in the previous mockup) colors would look better, IMO. Also, it's not really obvious at least to me, whether "General" is on the same level of hierarchy with "Community" and "Developers". Ratio aspect for "Sample art" and "Screenshot" need to be changes as well.
If my vote counts, I would go for the third one, if color scheme and other little things will be fixed.
