I finally got around to importing Andreas Nilsson's new icons (I tweaked them a little and added some more that I made), and fixing the code to load them. It's great! :)
Andreas, can you re-examine the XML editor icons -- I sent some comments about them a while back.
As far as David's whole-replacements, I've got a fall-back icon path preference thingy in the works, so hopefully we'll be able to give a list of files to go searching for icons through. :)
Here's the list of pixmaps still needing to be replaced:
add_xml_element_node.xpm \ add_xml_text_node.xpm \ delete_xml_attribute.xpm \ delete_xml_node.xpm \ duplicate_xml_node.xpm \ set.xpm \ writing_mode_lr.xpm \ writing_mode_tb.xpm

Sure, I'll get around to it as soon as possible.

Will be fixed ASAP. Hopefully I'll get around to start fixing them tonight. Have been a bit occupied with scalable Gnome Themes Icons latley. - Andreas

Ok, here are replacements for the first five ones. http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/add_xml_element_node.svg http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/add_xml_text_node.svg http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/delete_xml_attribute.svg http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/delete_xml_node.svg http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/duplicate_xml_node.svg
Might get around to fix the remaning three tomorrow and then we have finally got rid of the xpms in Inkscape.
I have also created scalable arrows to use in the xml-dialog and I will commit these to Gnome Icon Theme as soon as I have figured out a bit more cleaner way to implent them (filters for dropshadow and other stuff). http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/arrow_up.svg http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/arrow_down.svg http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/arrow_right.svg http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/arrow_left.svg
Hope the icons will do. - Andreas

Don't forget to submit to the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) as well! They look great!
Thx, Jon

But then they would be placed under Public Domain, right? Shouldn't they be licenced under the GPL, like the rest of the program? - Andreas

Yes.

Should? It is more a question of what you want and how much you are willing to give away.
The absolute minimum Inkscape would need would be for you to license the "code" of your SVG under the General Public License (it's all a bit weird for data files) but if you were willing to put them in the Public Domain it would mean one less licensing detail for the developers to worry about.

Yes, I know relicencing an application from the GPL can be bit of a headache, but that is also the strength of the license. I have created these icons for use with free software and I would not like them to end up in a non-free application. There is of course the possibility to dual-license them, but I'm afraid this is not possible in this case. The thing is that some of them are based on icons from the Gnome Icon Theme and those icons are already licensed under the GPL (or is it LGPL?), so it's not up to me in this case. I also plan to submit these svg images to the Gnome developers as soon as I can figure out a way to make shadows in a nicer way. - Andreas

i think there are two parts of the problem: - the first half is creating the shadows, and here i can't see other solution than http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=93438&atid=604309&func=deta... - the second one is displaying shadows in Gnome: if you add shadows using the Blur filter, will be librsvg able to render them?

I downloaded and tested both http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/images/filters/filters00.svg and http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/images/filters/filters01.svg and librsvg seems to be able to render them almost perfect. I tried to implent filters using a text editor following some examples of filters from the net, but this far I have not been able to get satisfied with my efforts. Here is my results this far: http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/writing_mode_lr_withshadow.svg
It would be really nice if Inkscape could implent filters soon (yes, I know, this is on the roadmap) since the HIG suggests that icons should use a dropshadow. - Andreas

Here are the to last ones. http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/writing_mode_lr.svg http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/writing_mode_tb.svg Is the set icon currently used? When I look in the xml window of the version I'm using (0.40 on Debian testing) I don't see it. The button only contains the text "set". - Andreas
