I wonder whether pdf has the ability to output blur/filter natively. I do a lot now with blur like shadows but the exported pdf is not the same. I already downloaded the pdf reference but there might be to much pages so I did not found the reference.
I am looking for something that corresponds to svg filters. Could someone point me to the right direction ?

This brings up a more general question, what is the status of Cairo based PDF export? I just checked Inkscape SVN with Cairo 1.4.8. In addition to missing Gaussian Blur support, support for the following is absent:
1. Patterns 2. Masking 3. Clipping
Dashed strokes also have a problem.
In March there seemed to be great optimism about using Cairo for rendering with Carl Worth stating that he wants to "Give inkscape everything it needs for a switch to cairo". I assume that if Inkscape could use Cairo for rendering internally, export to PDF would be automatically taken care of.

We used to have a checklist of PDF exporting features missing too...
