There are innumerable different areas you can dip your toes into, and I'm sure many people will have suggestions. I wanted to point you at a few places to look for ideas.

Fairly simple tasks, that need done throughout the codebase.

Here's a query into our bug tracker for open performance bugs. su_v is a really good resource for info about bug reports, you can find her on our IRC channel, #inkscape-devel.

Regular development work. Many of these need moderate programming experience but we can probably link you up with a more experienced developer to give guidance.
