I keep running into the situation where instead of 2 handles I only have one - I suspect the missing handle is actually centered on the node itself but there doesn't seem to be any way to get at it. As I cursor around I get all the handles, not just the 'selected node". so is there a way to: a) just get the handles for the selected node ? b) way to highlight the handle points so even if it's on a node, a user can click on it
? or is the 2nd handle sometimes not there ?
I think this is somewhat a user question, but also a design/development question.

Shift+drag a node to drag out the hidden handle.
There should be a hint in the statusbar that tells you about this, but probably it's not shown in its entirety.
In the new node tool (dev version) the hint is shortened so that it only tells you which modifiers you can press to get more options, and when you press Shift it tells you that it will drag out a handle.
