Winner: About screen contest
Thanks for everyone's vote, the results are as follows:
1. https://inkscape.org/en/~artelnjeru01/%E2%98%85about-092-2-good%C2%A0(#4) 2. https://inkscape.org/en/~Mikhael/%E2%98%85space-inkscape%C2%A0(#1) 3. https://inkscape.org/en/~artelnjeru01/%E2%98%85about-092-11%C2%A0(#2) 4. https://inkscape.org/en/~bajinra/%E2%98%85draw-freely-in-sticker-sty le (#3)
Congratulations to artelnjeru01! Please pass around the good news to all. The entrants this year were really VERY good, even those that didn't make this round of voting.
I'm going to leave the committing of the winning entry to the repository to someone else. If you'd like to do this job, please download the svg directly from the above link.
We can select a developer's about screen for trunk too, any of the entrants can be considered and I don't think we need a vote on that. Or we can keep the machine robot we have now, both are good.
Best Regards, Martin Owens

Congratulations arelnjeru01 !!!
And thanks Martin for all your hard work making the website working to handle the contest. I know there were some glitches along the way, but it's all worked out in the end. Well done!!
I have some vague memory from last time, that the 2nd place entry becomes the about screen for the next dev version. But I could be wrong.

News article announcing winner, needed? I haven't seen Maren for a couple of days, and I think she's been on top of the news articles recently. I could write something brief, if it's needed. ....Although....well, it looks like I do have access to create a new news item now. If I click News in the top menu, then New news, it opens the Django editor. If that's the correct way to do it, I could get started.

How long does Inkscape take to start for you? Here it's coming up basically instantaneous. So I wonder if a loading screen is really needed, or if the work to add that should maybe be spent in fixing slowness in startup instead, like caching icons, querying fonts in a separate thread, ...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1528629 is a considerable issue (at least on Windows) and I don't see an alternative to building font cache on first start.

There's a fairly good pattern to follow for this.
1. New install, default to show the loading screen (it's a nice way to introduce the user, show them the fancy about screen graphic and give inkscape a chance to load fonts, icon cache etc) 2a. If the load time was below 2 seconds, disable the loading screen in future. (Which improves speed slightly too) 2b. Otherwise show a loading screen. 2c. Optional extra! Apologise to user if it takes more than 20 seconds.
This way you can have an loading screen and yet have it very rarely show up. At most, we aim for people to have seen it twice, once when they first load that takes more than 2 seconds and once more when it takes less than 2 seconds and then turns itself off.
Best Regards, Martin Owens
Yes, this is a great solution, and one I look forward to. It takes an average of 5 seconds for Inkscape to load a new file for me. It can take up to 20 seconds if I'm opening something with a lot of linked images. That's plenty of time either way to wonder if Inkscape is loading something, or activated. Sure, if we can make Inkscape load faster regardless of what else the system is doing, let's do that. In the mean time, there's an auto disappearing loading screen.

It's also something every polished piece of professional graphics software has. I don't even mind if it shows for half a second before disappearing, it makes Inkscape look really fast in comparison to the competition instead of really slow. 2 seconds of splash screen to load a full vector editing software is great. Especially compared to the 5 to 10 seconds it takes Adobe Illustrator to load. Now compare that to 2 second (at least) to show any signs of life... Not as good. :) Doesn't feel as fast, even though the time waiting is the same.

Inkscape also starts up acceptably fast for me on my system, and I would not like to see it burdened with a startup screen. But I know it is considered traditional and fairly common on Windows. I am -1 to adding it in general (I'd rather see attention going into speeding up the load), but would be open to a compromise of having a build option to enable/disable it, and leave it to packagers to decide whether to have it or not for the platform in particular.
