This is likely to be that the poppler API changed. We've added a fix for that, and detection, in SVN but not released a patch for 0.46 for it.
It's been on my TODO list for a little while as this is also broken with the 0.46 packages in Intrepid and any other distro that is shipping an updated version of poppler.

Why am I not getting the crash with the Inkscape package from Intrepid's repo though?

inkscape (0.46-2ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low
* Merge with Debian unstable to fix FTBFS with current poppler. See 0.46-1ubuntu1 for remaining Ubuntu changes. * Add 03-gtk-includes.dpatch as a workaround of GTK includes bug (LP #247909) to fix FTBFS. (LP: #238223) * Build against boost 1.35.

That would probably be why a version built on Debian unstable would break, but it should be fixed in the packaged version. Distro patch. I didn't realize that Martin/Debian had done that patch already -- great, off my TODO! :)
