A few weeks ago I mentioned that we'd be looking for new web hosting due to various problems we've had with SourceForge. For example, most of us probably noticed how atrociously slow wiki and screenshots were loading before, during, and after the release.

Yesterday, the fine folks at Oregon State University's Open Source Lab (OSU-OSL) have been so kind as to give us a bare bones Xen virtual partition with gentoo, root access, and 10G of disk space. :-)

There's a lot left to do to get the machine set up and ready for regular use, but I've got apache up, and have directed our website to pull screenshots from the new system:

(Actually, the screenshots seemed to be loading fine at the time migrated them, but with SF who knows how long this'll last...) From now on, we won't have the loading problems.

Next step will be to move the wiki over. This'll require setting up mysql, php, a brief downtime of the wiki, etc. which is all straightforward, but will take some time to do. As a plus, we'll be upgrading from the antique (and insecure) version 1.4.3 to the latest stable version, 1.6.7. Also, upgrading mediawiki will be considerably easier, so hopefully this'll help us stay atop the security fixes.

Before we can move the remainder of the website over, we will need to set up account management tools, so we can easily provide ssh access to whomever needs it for web stuff. I'm guessing maybe a week or two?

There are no plans at this time to move over anything else from SourceForge (mailing lists, svn, bug tracking, etc.) If it ain't broke... But there's no reason we can't move those things over and do them ourselves if we wish, we just need to ensure we have adequate sysadmin volunteers available to keep the services well maintained.
