Hello Everyone,
Sorry for being away from the project for awhile I was recuperating from injuries from being hit by a car.
My dumb luck I guess, I hope I am still allowed to help on the project pickup where I was.
Inkscape, Inkscape-web, and bugs etc. Please tell me if I am allowed I see I am still on inkscape devel member, and the Inkscape-web. Inkscape bugs.
I still have wiki access, and most of the access is still in place.
Regards, Leo Jackson
Hi Leo,
I'm sorry to hear about you getting injured. There is no need for you to apologize, the random events of life happen to us all. Members of our community can come and go as they please, we're all volunteers here. So yes, you are welcome to resume working on the things you were doing or whatever else you would like to pursue within the project. :)
Cheers, Josh

Sure. That's what I meant. Other than GSoC or contract work, who is/has been an employee working Inkscape?
In general, a majority are volunteers however... even if they have been paid to work on Inkscape at one time or another. I'm not aware of anyone getting paid to work on the bug tracker, web stuff, etc. though which was the capacity he was talking about.
Cheers, Josh

Some are paid by GSoC, some are employees working on features and I'm contracting.
Did you mean casual and diverse? :-D

I meant people who work for a company as an employee, not work _for_ any inkscape organisation. Wasn't there a guy called Rei last week who said his company will work on SMIL animation support?

Wouldn't it be nice if there were. That's the problem; sometimes "we're all volunteers" is given to mean "Isn't is great we're all amateurs who get to work on inkscape as a hobby" instead of what I see which is "We're not organised well enough to pull in sufficient funding or grants to secure release cycles let alone feature development"
Wouldn't you like to work on Inkscape full time Josh, if you could, if you knew there was a steady income to be made? I feel Inkscape _is_ big enough to do that sort of thing.

I know what you meant. I'm just unaware of any companies that have done that. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but I just don't know of it happening. Also, I can't tell you the number of times we've had people contact us saying someone was going to fund them working on X, Y, or Z and nothing ever happened. While I don't want to doubt the person who said they will work on SMIL support, I don't get my hopes up anymore.

Ugh. Anyone that takes it to mean that is mistaken. That may be given to mean what you say in other projects, but not ours. Our contributors range from professional software developers who work for companies such as Google, Canonical, IBM, Symantec, etc to a number of other types of professionals (designers, IT consultants, teachers, engineers, manufacturers, etc), and yes, students, hobbyists, and more.
This is something you want to take up with the board if you're looking to have us actually pursue fundraising. Historically the board has been opposed to paying people to work on Inkscape. Paying to get people to conferences, hackfests, etc has typically been the preference.

No. It's been a soul crushing decade of my life to be honest. Inkscape is certainly big enough to pursue this sort of thing, we just need someone with a passion on the level of Ton Roosendaal.
Cheers, Josh
Josh,
Thank you very much, and I will start ASAP.
