I didn't realize these new native file dialogs on Windows were going to completely replace the GTK ones.
I actually find the GTK ones to be easier to use because of those handy user links you can make on the left, and because of the way incremental search works.
I figured there would be something in Preferences to bring back the GTK dialog, but I couldn't find such a thing. Is it just hiding from me somewhere?

Can I suggest you add shortcuts into your My Documents folder to link to the places you want to go to. Either that, or you can customise the places bar by modifying your registry as explained here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc300434.aspx
I specifically want to avoid adding more preferences for things like this if possible. This article explains why: http://www106.pair.com/rhp/free-software-ui.html
Does that make sense? What do you think?
All the best Joel

Check out the new SourceForge.net Marketplace. I'm not going to raise a big stink about it. But I'll just note that Adobe Photoshop has a run-time toggle to select their "enhanced" file dialog vs the native file dialog.
Actually I would find Inkscapes dialogs much easier to use if they just remembered where they were from invocation to invocation. Then those links would be much less critical. And also it would be nice if they remembered the last save format used. For instance I frequently work in a way where I'm trying to keep PDF mirrors of the files I'm working on. In that case I use "save a copy as..." but that always defaults to the current directory rather than the directory I last used for "save a copy as..." and it always defaults to SVG instead of the last format I used.

This was fixed recently and should work now on both Windows and Linux.

Cool. I had a snapshot from June 6, so I guess it must have been fixed quite recently.
What about remembering the last format used for "Save a copy as..."?

Just downloaded yesterday's snapshot.
Open and Save As... remember their last directories now, which is good.
But Save a copy... still does not, and it also doesn't remember the last format chosen. Actually it seems to use the last Save As... directory, but then doesn't set it. I think the proper thing is for "save as" and "save a copy" to have independently remembered directories. Filed as bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/241135
One more thing the GTK dialog did, IIRC, was to automatically set the default "Save a copy..." file name to something based on the original file name + newly chosen extension. The new native dialog just leaves it blank. Some similar bugs existed in the tracker but seem to be marked as fixed, and probably related to the GTK dialog rather than the native one. good comment, probably the best thing to do would be to file a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/ .
Since Win32 dialogs are used, and since I have to used Windows XP at work, I find a way to use explorer as nautilus places:
First I added the favorite button in explorer and added list of shortcuts inside http://ftpmerou.free.fr/inkscape/like-places.png
Next I downloaded the SaveAs editor (French app): http://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche13918-enregistrer-sous-editeur.html There is an English one here (different app) : http://www.maddogsw.com/placesbar/
And finally I added favorites to places: http://ftpmerou.free.fr/inkscape/saveas-favorites.png
All these hacks told me that windows xp is really boring in an every day use.
