Suggestion for the preferences dialog

(This might have been fixed in 0.40, but since I run Debian testing I still use 0.39. If that is the case, ignore this mail.) I currently find the preferences dialog a bit hard to navigate, partly because it feels a bit crowded, but mostly because it presents the usability problem of tabs in tabs. See for example the Interface Hall of Shame: http://digilander.libero.it/chiediloapippo/Engineering/iarchitect/tabs.htm The tools/shapes creates the most trouble of navigation. (see http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/inkscape_tabsintabs.png) So, I did a little gimping and came up with a new preferences dialog similar to the one beep-media-player uses. http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/inkscape_new_prefs_mockup.png The icons are ones that I found on jimmacs site and thought somewhat fitted, or ones I drew very quickly. I think that looks great. :)
With the gtmm'ification coming up here for 0.41, hopefully this can get done. I think that looks much cleaner, too.

After some off-list comments by Alan I have redone the mockup a bit. I got rid of the tabs and did a tree-view for the subsections, I have also paid some attention to the Gnome HIG to get the spacing right and got rid of the frames around the items. Looks very good, thanks. Now, if only someone could implement this :)

Looks really nice except a little thing -- the pencil icon :)

Oh, yes, you are correct. It should be a pencil, not a brush. - Andreas Nilsson

Well, actually Pen and Pencil are quite alike things in comparison to, say, Pencil and Brush :)
IMHO, it's not a good idea to have settings for things that are explicitely not mentioned anywhere else in GUI. We have "Draw freehand lines", "Darw Bezier curves and straight lines" and "Draw calligraphic lines". And the instrument on those icons is always the same -- a pencil with an eraser on the other side -- no Pen and no Brush. This is quite confusing to my mind.

What approach did you use to create this mockup?
I gave a shot at trying to mock up something with glade, but with disappointing results. However this definitely looks doable.
In fact... There are a few dialogs we've identified recently as needing a "tree view on left, various widgets on right, help/close buttons on bottom" style of layout, so I'm thinking it would be worthwhile to create an abstract 'TreeEditor' class for creating dialogs like this (along with the XML editor, extensions editor, layer editor, and maybe more).
