Additional Inkscape Funding - paying developers feature by feature
Hi,
Firstly, I am a big Inkscape fan, I have used it for various projects in the past year, this is my favorite http://fsfe.org/graphics/xbox-infographic.png (ie. I am not a spammer, lol)
So, my email is about funding. I am working with Open Funding http://funding.openinitiative.com/ to assist developers to get crowd funding for Free Software. Open Funding works on a feature by feature basis. For example the core-team at gimp are funding a symmetry painting feature at the moment http://funding.openinitiative.com/funding/1578/
I am not sure how Inkscape is funded at the moment, but I would very much like to assist any developer(s) to get funding for a feature. Also, if you don't need/want to earn money for your work, you could always donate the funds to the project in general.
This small scale funding is a great way for users (like myself) to give back, which they are often eager to do, but in a way which is very concrete, forward thinking and achievable. Its much simpler to set up than a large kickstarter campaign and is more deeply routed in the function of the software.
Please let me know what you think and if you are interested in getting funding this way, either as a group of core-developers or, if not, as an individual developer.
Thanks
Anna Morris

Hi Anna,
Any project based funding will have to go through the board and the Free Software Conservancy who handle those aspects of the project.
I wonder if we can have a license to fund from the board. A sort of sanction to seek funding in a specific way under Inkscape's umbrella. It wouldn't need money to flow through SFC, but could help routing costs.
In any regard; the small project pattern should make it easier to make that request.
Best Regards, Martin Owens
HI Anna,
There's a catch-22 in raising funds for community-developed software.
In order to raise funds for feature development, the work must to be broken down into defined tasks which are (presumably) achievable and testable. The money amount requested during the fund drive reflects the total of manhours estimated to achieve these tasks.
But getting this defined list of tasks is the roadblock.
Question: Is it acceptable for fundraisers to cover the cost of developing the estimate, so that the design team gets reimbursed for conducting a proper engineering effort?
How does Open Funding handle 'back payments' for engineering work? Any thoughts?

Yes, you just roll it in. It would be less acceptable to say "task one: pay us to figure out task two and three".
How much so is up to the individual I guess. I do a lot of consultancy work and its pretty much the system that you get paid more than you would per day for a normal full time job because there is work that happens in advance, and because you will have periods of "unemployment" between jobs too. So say my time is usually with £10 an hour, I would charge £15 an hour for contact work. That extra would cover additional hours worked in advance, unexpected problems and any debriefing work, plus a little to get me over till the next job.
Also, bear in mind that for Open Funding, some of these projects might on the table anyway, and it is just a way to bring in some funding in a very organic way and perhaps speed up the process.
I am really hoping we get CMYK out of this - its just the perfect project for the structure I think, plus there are so many people wanting it I think it would have no problem reaching its targets. Anyone interested in the job? ;)

I think we should have it first thing in the faq: can't have color separated output for a dime worth of job :)
