Leslie Hawthorn, who runs GSoC, just posted to the mentors announce list a msg with subject "***Very Important***: Get Your Students to Submit their Proposals via the 2009 site *now*".

If you're planning to apply, go ahead and do so now. This way, you can start to get feedback from us and Google can get an idea of how many students are applying. We fully expect applications to be iteratively refined before the deadline, so don't worry if your application is not complete, submit it now, so we can give you feedback on how best to complete it.

The other reason to do so, LH explained, is because it is vital information in considering whether to extend the application deadline, which is under consideration.
