Can you tell me more about how the calligraphy tool turns the path you draw into a sequence of beziers?

If you mean the current calligraphy tool (Ctrl+F6), then I have no idea. It was coded by a person who is not in the Inkscape team now. Try to research the code in dyna-draw-context.cpp.
