Inkscape makes a warning sound when backspace is used in the name field at the save as dialog (when the name field is blank). Is it possible to turn off this sound? It is extremely annoying.

Last I checked, Inkscape has no sounds itself. If you're hearing something, it's probably due to your OS.
Which OS are you on?

I confirm this on Windows. Very annoying. Probably a GTK issue.
I cannot confirm this on Win 2000 and April 25 Inkscape build.

I can confirm this for Windows XP. It also happens in input fields for extensions, like "Render LaTeX Formula" for example.
However, it seams that the following procedure got rid of system beeps:
The steps are; 1. Right-click on My Computer 2. On the Hardware tab, click on [Device Manager] 3. On the "View" menu, select "Show hidden devices" 4. Under "Non-Plug and Play Drivers", right-click "Beep" 5. Click "Disable" 6. Answer [Yes] when asked if you really want to disable it 7. Answer [No] when asked if you want to reboot 8. Right-click "Beep" again. 9. Click "Properties" 10. On the "Driver" tab, set the Startup type to Disabled 11. Click [Stop] 12. Click [OK] 13. Answer [No] when asked if you want to reboot
This is taken from http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/turn-off-the-annoying-windows-xp-syst... Pay attention to points 9, 10 and 11. Only disabling the beep (points 1-7) didn't solve the problem. The last few points are important.
I hope this helps.

Sorry for a bit late answer. It's quite a busy period for me :-/.
However, I've posted this on the wiki: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#How_do_I_turn_off_system_beep_on...
Maybe someone can check it because English is not my mother tongue. I also wrote where the procedure was taken from, but it is true that I did not contact the author (this was actually an answer from one of the How-To Geek site). Should I contact him, or this is treated as "public domain" anyway?

IANAL but I think it's too trivial and factual to worry about copyright in this case.

Does indeed seem to be due to Gtk: the same occurs in Gedit.
Under X11 (at least on Linux/Gnu), it's just the standard X11 beep ("bell") sound, whose pitch/duration/existence can be changed with the standard X11 program xset (xset b).
