* The new empty document created when you launch Inkscape or use File > New is now based on a template instead of being hard-coded into the program. If you want your new documents to have different initial zoom, window size, page border, metadata, etc., just save a document with the desired settings (it may contain some objects, too) as default.svg in your share/templates directory (typically /usr/local/inkscape/share/templates on Linux, $INKSCAPE_DIR\share\templates on Windows).
Later I will make File > New a submenu listing all svg files in templates dir, so that one can have more than one template and choose among them (Ctrl+N will always run default.svg). Now, Mental, you can add a default layer into the default.svg, to get layers going.

Later I will make File > New a submenu listing all svg files in templates dir, so that one can have more than one template and choose among them (Ctrl+N will always run default.svg).
And so I just did. Enjoy. Now we need several good templates, besides default.svg, to ship with Inkscape. If you have something that can be useful for others, please contribute.

[Sorry bulia for getting this message twice - why can't I just reply on sourceforge.net message list messages like in other mailing lists so that my replies actually go to the list???]
Hi,
I made this template (it's actually the second one) for creating a logo for my (old) school's library.
I had a need for it since Inkscape (or ps2eps?) doesn't (or didn't?) support exporting with the %%BoundingBox remaining on the whole document's borders, but instead remaining on the drawing's bounding box.
Another idea: what about a GIMP-like File>New dialog? (I just had to grin when thinking about its predefined toilet paper size ;) )

... and now I forgot the attachment (;

I have created these different sized templates which are pretty lame but they were sometimes more convenient than adjusting sizes manually so I held on to them. They should be considered public domain. http://matrix.netsoc.tcd.ie/~horkana/dev/jasc/webdraw/templates/
Something to consider: ideally the template information could be used as template sizes for when users are resizing or cropping their documents.
