Re: [Inkscape-devel] Tango icons as default set
I made some changes in the Tango set to match some aspects of the current oficial set.
http://www.ohweb.com.ar/screenshots/Inkscape/tango-icons-colors.svg.tar.gz
-Created a new icon for the 3D box. No more box with trapezoid :-) -Added colors to the geometric primitives -Unified and tweaked the drawing icons (now all point upwards) -Created a new icon for the gradient tool -Created a new icon for the flood fill tool
Maybe some of them need some tweaking. It's my first time creating tango icons, but I think they are acceptable. I don't like the color icons, but I'm trying to reach a compromise and see if people who prefered the oficial set find this set acceptable. I'll try to tweak the bucket icon a little, maybe to make more evident the part of the dripping paint (separating more the paint blob of the bucket).
I didn't change the tweak icon, please let me know if you think it should be changed. I find the hand icon more appropriate, since that tool allows some sort of manual tweaking, some humanization. It's a very complete tool and it would be very hard to find only one icon for all its features and I think -let me know if you don't agree- the "finger" icon covers pretty well the idea of the tool. Besides, that tool is a transformation tool, not a drawing tool, and the current icon is so abstract that may be interpreted as a shape tool.
Another icon I didn't touch was the connector tool. Do you think it needs color too?
Here is a side by side comparison of both toolbars: http://www.ohweb.com.ar/screenshots/Inkscape/Tango-Icons-Colors.png
I'd like to hear your feedback. Do you think it's more acceptable with these changes? What other changes should be considered to accept this set as the default?

Could you please include the Tango toolbar before your modifications in the picture for comparison?

That is better. Though I think now there's too much color in the shape tools. Especially the 3D box is too dark and saturated.
Do we really need to have white lines in Pen/Pencil, Calligraphic, and Spiral? Is it against some guidelines to draw crisp, visible black lines, which would also match the default style of these tools? (they draw black lines, not white!)
With this comparison, I cannot help noticing that it is definitely the Tango icons that look more childish, naive, clumsy - not our current set. Not to mention paler and harder to make out. Sorry but this is how I see it. I would accept the change if the majority votes for it, but it will be a sad day for me when this happens.

I sure have to agree with Bulia - only the eraser looks better in Tango. In fact, not only better looking but more clear in what they do. I realize there's some goodness is having the different applications (ie GIMP) use the same icons but maybe the other projects should switch to Inkscape icons.
Hello,
I'm a user of Inkscape, mainly on Windows and very (very) rarely on Xubuntu and Ubuntu. I checked in SVN for the SVG Tango icons and found the file, which I studied carefully.
N.B.: I'll give here my "user" point of view, which reflects my taste and my rationale. Please, forgive me if this message isn't always "nice"... it's not meant to be aggressive, it's just that tastes in icons/applications is a passionate thing - so I'm allowed to tell my mind with passion on the matter :-)
Well, re. the proposed Tango icon set for Inkscape... I do NOT want to be "forced" to test the Tango icons - let alone to be forced to use them. I hate the Tango icons. :-)
The main reasons are:
- they are unreadable, "undecodable". I do not need to use a magnifying glass to "decode" the current (non Tango) icon set, the icons are "sharp" and "clear". Compared to them, the Tango icons are... "wtf?... which icon is that...?" I do not want to lose time wondering each time I need to click on an icon (and it happens quite a lot in Inkscape, because I don't use the shortcuts or F-keys). Honestly, I hardly *see* the Tango icons.
- they belong to the Linux world. I know they are supposed to be suitable to multi-platform applications, but in the real reality, this isn't the case, and they say "Linux", they say GTK or KDE. As I said before, I use Inkscape on Windows. Why would I need "Linux-like" icons which clash so badly with any Windows (or, I guess, Mac) theme and which I cannot decode anyway?
- I do not use any other "free" software which uses the Tango icon set, such as The Gimp or..., so I don't care about "being used" to seeing such or such icons.
- I believe each application can have its own style, its own icons. I hate the "applications on a platform must all look alike" concept, it's sterile, it's boring, it's dull.
So, my user opinion is: if the Linux users are masochists and want to have Tango style icons for Inkscape, fine, give them a GUI to switch to Tango icons. Me, as a user of Inkscape on Windows, I just want clear, sharp, and decodable icons - just like the current icons! I pray you, Inkscape developers, please, keep the current default set as the default!
Thanks! (and again... no personal attack here :-)
Great work Guillermo! I love what your doing.
My comments between the new tango and the old.
- The finger is fine - I love the perspective on the box tool - loks much better - Personally I think the white shape tools looked better, but I don't feel that strongly. - Minor Point: The polygon border looks a tiny bit light to me - Pen/Pencil/Quill: I love the consistency there - looks good - Eraser: Looks good to me - Flood fill: The new icon is very good, but I think the old one was fine, and it fitted with Art-Libre. No big deal though. - New gradient tool: love it! much better than the grey gradient. - Minor Point: The handles on the gradient tool look a bit light to me
I think you're doing excellent work, and I'm looking forward to my next inkscape project with the refreshed icons! I hope it gets set standard, because I want my friends to see them.

very nice sintesis!! maybe more 'degrade' to gradient fill icon?
