
It would be very much useful if we could access masks and clipping paths without releasing them, cause right now it's a mess, especially when you start doing mask of mask of clip + mask.
Would have posted this on the tracker but I wanted people to discuss how you'd want this implemented.

I don't think we need anything that complex. The plan is simply to allow the node tool edit both the object itself and its clippath and mask (which may use e.g. different color of nodes), and gradient tool to edit both the gradient of the object itself and its mask. This looks like will cover most practical needs.

I've got a mockup on the tracker that is along quite similar lines, but generalised to include anything that could be construed as a filter, including blur, opacity, transformations and even some path effects as well as clip and mask.
