Thanks for a detailed report, but it would really help if you could test the latest prerelease. With 0.44pre3 on Windows I get the same rendering as 0.42, which is correct as far as I can see. I have no 0.42 installed here to check why it misbehaved.

I found a temporary workaround by switching to the very close bitstream vera sans font, which doesn't have this problem.
Sorry, but if I can avoid a compilation of inkscape... ;-)
