One thing about your proposal, if you do a dialog for open existing files or for open with complex templates, please add a config strored value "mas size preview" it speed using files without hangs waits till rendering bid SVG or Images.

Maybe your proposal could be used for the import dialog too? If do, it can help to surf in a for example tag based works of the user, or for open clipart... Or maybe better could integrate the 0.48+devel new widget for Symbols.
