Alright, now I understand why you were asking about the visual references for the tiling guides. I was approaching the issue from a "need as little prior knowledge as possible" approach, while you are interested in an educational approach.
That could be solved simply enough. There could be an option to toggle indicators and markers on and off, and maybe show "neighbouring tiles."
I'll try to add such options to the existing mock-up. :)

I think this is key that a distinction has been made. I think that one of the things that makes for good UI is that level of knowledge should be irrelevant. It should be obvious enough for a new user after toying around for a short period of time yet not too limited or cumbersome for advanced/experienced users to be slowed down by it.
