stirring it up some more ... 0.45 ramp up?
Bryce and others, what's the 411 on the Summer of Code projects and can we get a 0.45 out before the end of October?
How does it feel y'all? What do you all think? Googl SoC'cers, how is your code in the codebase?
Ideally, it would be great to ramp up this release as the commits are getting lower, message activity is lower on the lists and downloads are going down as well...thus, seems like a great time to put the press on...thoughts?

For the filters code, I think it's in quite good shape, but not quite good enough. There are a couple bugs, which degrade the usability horribly. At least, the banding problem: big transarent gaps appear in blurred images. Sorry, but I have been too busy lately to look at it.
And yes, there still is only one filter...

Whoops, old info. Running inkscape in debugger, I just struck gold and found the reason for this problem. (a rather stupid one, too, so I won't go into further detail) Now fixed in SVN.

See, if we don't put the push on for a release, some bugs don't get fixed so easily :) Very cool! :)
Great work!

That is ok. The infrastructure there for more...
Ok, I think we should still put the push on to release and hopefully get some other contributors to this codebase by showing that it exists, needs love, etc.
Plus, in our bugfix state towards the end of a release cycle, we could hopefully get others to help nail these...thoughts?

Have you had any chance to look at the win32 crash with filters?

Yup, probably would be good to get going on the release. Things seem fairly quiescent, so this sounds like it'd be a good point to cut one.
Is anyone in the middle of any development work that must be finished before we freeze?

I notice there are a bunch of patches in the patch tracker. Jon, could you look through them for ones that ought to be included in this release?
Thanks, Bryce

Sure, I will do this and commit the good and postpone the "needing work."

- we need to finish filling in undo descriptions
- we got a new dll from Tor Lillquist which might fix the dialogs-on-top windows bug - ishmal is working on making a build with it
- axonometric grid must snap before it's useful
- there are issues with blur still
that's just from the top of my head...

I need to go through the patch tracker this weekend and clean out the closet on that still...

Why can't we give Jon some time to work on his stuff? He wasn't very active after 0.44, but did a lot of good work before that, so I'd vote for postponing the next release (which is always a stress for developers :) if Jon has short-term development plans.

I *think* I'd be on track to get stuff to a releasable state in about a month.
However, for the "wide toolbars" problem, Aaron and I have a bit of a handle on it, and can work on much of it stand-alone. So this could be done wile 0.45 were going through release and then go into the SVN right after 0.45 is out the door.
On the other hand, if this UI fix would be *desired* for 0.45, then I'm very confident about being able to get in in within a reasonable timeframe. Also I can definitely see the benefit of the UI change.
So I think this is an executive decision: release a few weeks eariler, but with the existing "fat" UI; or add a few weeks to the schedule and get a UI that can be drug narrower.
(I think the time delta would be a few weeks instead of a whole month since the release prep and bug hunt will overlap much of that).

Someone did a release checklist for 0.44. That was a pretty useful thing. Having such a list would help us understand what we can do and what we can't do for 0.45.

I did the checklist for 0.44 and will try to put one together for 0.45 too.

Here is a release checklist for 0.45. I am not totally caught up on what everyone's working on, so please fill me in on what is missing or not up to date.
There is also a preliminary release plan for the steps to take in this release cycle. Please let me know if you spot any issues.
Bryce
Development checklist for 0.45 ============================== - we need to finish filling in undo descriptions
- we got a new dll from Tor Lillquist which might fix the dialogs-on-top windows bug - ishmal is working on making a build with it (ishmal)
- there are issues with blur still
- Fix for "wide toolbars" issue (JonCruz)
- Axonometric grid must snap before its useful. Reorganize grid classes and grid snapping stuff. (Johan Engelen)
- JS-DOM binding. Being debugged currently. Will give in-memory scripting of Inkscape internals. (ishmal)
- Export dialog. Working general-purpose export dialog for more than just PNG. (ishmal)
Release 0.45 Plan -----------------
1. Open development.
2. Chill. Development focuses on wrapping up. - See "Development work to finish" below - Shoot for getting 50% of items completed Review/cleanup bug tracker. ~2 wks Create about screen Identify/stub all things to put in Release Notes. Update tutorials and other docs
3. Frost. Most development complete. We track handful of development work. Release Notes should be >90% filled in. ~2 wks Bug Hunt: 500 points Post inkscape-0.45-alpha.tar.gz
4. Feature Freeze. No further development work. Focus on critical bug fixing. ~2 wks Finalize all tutorials, docs, etc. Finalize all extensions Translators create translations. Inkscape must pass 'make distcheck' Post inkscape-0.45-beta.tar.gz
5. Hard freeze. Only release wardens can commit to mainline. Focus on "MUST FIX" bug fixing. ~2 wks Finalize translations, release notes, etc. Packagers test creating pkgs of the -beta release - Try getting pkgs for all major platforms Post inkscape-0.45-rc1.tar.gz
6. Branch. SVN is branched. Complete any late-late-late work. Final verification of packaging, release notes, docs, etc. Publish more release candidates until ready for release.
7. Release. Post official announcements Post official announcements
8. Open development.

I just committed fixes to the most important blur issues. There are still display bugs remaining, but at least, fixing those bugs won't make old files look different - i.e. in almost all cases, our rendering of blur now matches that of Batik. So I'd say blur is in a releaseable state now.
- Fix for "wide toolbars" issue (JonCruz)
What has been committed so far needs quite some work to not be a regression.

We need to follow through on it though. The toolbars have finally pushed the minimum window size wide enough that Inkscape is unusable on my laptop, which is a regression in itself.

Let's do this: Work on this in parallel and see how far along you can get with it. If it can be sufficiently completed and stablized before we hit hard freeze, then we can merge it in. That way if you need additional time, you can take it and won't need to stress out about getting it done for the release.
How's that sound?

How is this work coming along so far? I've seen good interesting noises on IRC the past week or two so assuming development is progressing well? Have we allowed enough time for this work, that we can start on releasing 0.45?

Btw, about toolbars: http://www.curlyankles.com/
"CurlyAnkles is a versatile library written in C on GNU/Linux. It has been written for GTK/GNOME and features a number of advanced features not found in the base GTK library. These include docking widgets and customisable toolbars and menus."
