I'm probably not the first to suggest this, but why not offer a set of keyboard shortcuts that corresponds (more or less) to the default shortcuts used in Adobe Illustrator? I've worked with Illustrator for years and the shortcuts are second nature to me; I'd like to use Inkscape but learning another set of shortcuts is not exactly appealing.

Shortcuts are part of user experience. You will *never* get the same user experience as in Illustrator. What you *will* get will be just crippled Inkscape. Take it from the person who actually created most of those shortcuts mimicing other applications for Inkscape, including Adobe Illustrator.
