I want to be a GSoC student again this year. I have some ideas and would like to hear suggestions.
I could eventually work on:
1) SVG animation support (I usually animate SVG using javascript. It would be cool if we had declarative animation support also) 2) Pedro Whiteboard (I really would like to see this feature working) 3) migrating SPObject and derived classes to C++ (I am not sure whether this is too hard for a GSoC project) 4) any other suggestions?

Fixing the HORRIBLE thing we call a text tool. ;) I'm pretty sure that would rank very high if someone planned to re-implement the text tool controls bar and to also add a number of other controls (kerning, rotation, etc) that have been sadly missing for a long time from the UI. As great as animation support would be or a working whiteboard (which would be fantastic), fixing one of the biggest usability issues we have would be better (imho). Also, if GSoC is going to be downsized this year as it sounded like, it would probably be advisable to choose a must have feature over a really cool one.
Cheers, Josh

...auto-hypenation etc.

I might want to work on the text tool... :-) I hate it with a passion.

On thing that would help me as a user would be a "Special Character" dialogue which allows one to view and select the characters from fonts that don't easily map to the keyboard. With large fonts this would be very helpful; even with small "extras" fonts it would be a fair time-saver.
I wish I had the time to do it myself, but if people are taking suggestions, then that's mine.

Shouldn't this happen at the desktop environment/OS level?

It's certainly arguable, but when working with adverts and logos it is such a common issue that it might be handy to have it integrated. I did use to find the windows one quite fiddly when handling complex fonts (eg, arabic) but I've not used Windows in so long I don't know if it's got better in this regard.
