Re: [Inkscape-devel] [Inkscape-user] Feature question, only current layer visible

I would like Inkscape to show only contents of the active (selected?) layer, other layers would not be visible.
Someone just needs to implement Alt+click on a layer in Layer dialog to hide all other layers. That's how it's done in Photoshop so it will be a familiar shortcut for most users.

Alt+click on a layer in InDesign selects all objects of the layer, IIRC. Which one is closer to Inkscape? :)

Alt+click on layer indeed selects all objects in Illustrator, but Alt+click on the visibility icon works as I described. We just need to implement both shortcuts (as well as probably others).

Alt+Click on the Lock icon behaves like alt+click on visibility and toggles the locks on all other layers. Ctrl+Click on the Visibility icon toggles Outline mode for that layer only. Ctrl+Click on the layer selects or de-selects a layer (they allow multiple selection), this would be handy for being able to move multiple layers up and down at the same time. That's what I know off-hand...

Perhaps we can do better if we steal from another genre. Audio applications often have a "solo" and "mute" button for tracks. I don't use the feature often so I'm not exactly sure how it works. But if I were to wager a guess the mute button works like our current hide buttons do, dissabling a single track/layer. And the solo button overrides this hide preference without disturbing it, causing only the solo track/layer to be seen/heard. Only a single solo can be checked at a time. This might allow greater flexibility. Just a thought.

+1, that's how I envisioned it, a "Layer visibility" setting which toggled between normal and current only.
Thanks, Kent

+1; this sounds like a good way to do it.
