SourceForge.net Update: 2006-09-08 Edition
Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2006 23:59:32 -0700 (PDT)
0. Introduction
1. Sysadmin of the year
2. July Project of the Month: openQRM
3. September Project of the Month: Linux-NTFS
4. Statistics
Judging from the spike in
SourceForge.net traffic this week, the
Northern Hemisphere is back to work. To those of you returning from
summer holidays, welcome back to
SourceForge.net! You will be happy to
know that your counterparts in the Southern Hemisphere have been very
busy. Throughout their winter, the countries of Brazil, Argentina,
Australia, Peru and Chile have all been among the top twenty countries
for visits to
SourceForge.net. For the months of June and July, Brazil
surpassed Germany to account for the second most visits to the site.
Like our friends in the Southern Hemisphere, the
SourceForge.net team
has been busy too. We recently deployed a major version upgrade of our
main site database software in conjunction with a database hardware
systems upgrade. To ensure a smooth upgrade, we performed extensive
testing and secured the assistance of Command Prompt, a database
consulting firm (
www.commandprompt.com). You may have already noticed an
improvement in site performance. Once we've had a bit more time in
production for tuning, we are confident that you'll notice further
improvement in site performance.
We also kept busy by bringing aboard additional, talented software
engineers and a user interaction designer.
Once these recent hires are fully up to speed, they will begin working
on our comprehensive file release system redesign, which is already
underway. Because we plan to improve the file release system in small
iterations, you should expect to see steady progress over the next
several months.
Going forward, in addition to file release system improvements, we are
also exploring a more flexible approach to project navigation. Even
though we remain committed to revamping, extending and adding to the
developer tools that we provide, we recognize that sometimes our 128,000
projects have unique needs. Project administrators will soon be able to
provide their users with access to additional tools or services
regardless of their hosted location. Engineering work is underway.
Our summer hasn't been all work, a hiring spree and no fun. As some of
you have already discovered, we also packaged up and launched the
Syracuse project (
http://sourceforge.net/projects/syracuse), which
contains all of the source code that powers SourceForge.net's search
system. If you need to index and search a lot of data, give Syracuse a
try and let us know what you think!
Thank you for your continued support of
SourceForge.net.

September Project of the Month: Linux-NTFS
------------------------------------------------------------
The goals of this project are to create a new Linux kernel driver for
the NTFS file system (1.2, 3.x, and later), user space utilities (e.g.
format, NTFS check, etc.), and a library to avoid code duplication and
provide access to NTFS to other GPL programs.
On the driver side (kernel NTFS driver, ntfsmount, ntfs-3g), the project
allows users to read and write to their NTFS partitions (the public
kernel driver is mostly read-only at the moment whilst ntfsmount and
ntfs-3g are read-write), thus allowing people to use their Windows files
under Linux. On the utilities side, it allows people to create NTFS
volumes (mkntfs), resize existing volumes (ntfsresize), create copies of
volumes (for backup purposes for example -- ntfsclone), and do all sorts
of other things with NTFS volumes. On the library front, NTFS library
(libntfs) provides API for other GPLed programs to access NTFS volumes,
such as the recovery program TestDisk.

When the
SF.net team sends out a site-wide email, we sometimes see
replies that look like this: "Hey! I didn't ask to be on this list! You
spammer. I hate you! I hate your dog! (insert other colorful phrases
here)." The truth is, when you registered on
SourceForge.net there was a
check box that said "Receive Site-wide updates, low volume." You left it
checked when you submitted the registration form, hence you are
receiving this email. We send these updates every 4 to 6 weeks, so it
truly is low volume. However if you want off, this is not a problem.
