I am a french student in «Master 1» of computer sciences (equivalent to a Bac+4). I use Inkscape every days during my studies and hobbies. That's why, I am interested by the development of Inkscape. I have some skills in C/C++ and Doxygen but I never have contributed to an open source project. During my studies, I have done some programs, like an « image manipulation » program in C++ with QT, and some programs with GTK+. Also, I know how to report bugs, i already reported some bugs in Launchpad.
Currently, I have done a checkout of inkscape with Bazaar. And I maked the project, he is correctly running. So now, I am asking you what can I do in order to help the project.
If you want to ask me questions, we can go on IRC or something else. Also, you can show me the documentation that i have to read :-)

one think you could try is reading the parts of the SVG specification that most interest you: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/
and try to find something there that Inkscape still does not support. One of our main objectives is to have full SVG support someday.
I have worked on SVG Fonts, SVG Filters and ICC color profiles, so I can help in case you need tutoring on those parts of the code.

PS: our policy for becoming an Inkscape commiter is to have at least 2 patches from you accepted (positively reviewed by one of the current developers and incorporated to trunk). From then on you'll have write access to the development repository.

I agree with everything Felipe said and I suggest you to investigate Google's Summer of Code program. The GSoC program aims to encourage students to become new open source contributors by providing organized mentoring and monetary incentives.

You can try to fix existing bugs, or implement new features listed in the bug report system (tagged as "Wishlist") and in the blueprint part of Launchpad. And there are lots of other things you can do (coding and non-coding stuff), as explained in the FAQ (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Contributing_to_Inkscape).
