- Do we activate the Effects menu in 0.43? I think we should.
- Did we find a volunteer to do static RPMs? The need for them is definitely there.
- Michael, what of your TODO for the connector tool may be ready for the 0.43? The bug with ellipses at least should be fixed.
- What is the status of the other SoC projects with regard to their availability in 0.43?

Well, there are two threads on the user list now that justify the choice for leaving them off in 0.42. The problem is that when enabled the effects look very native to Inkscape. But they require significant extra work on the part of the user to actually function after being enabled. There is no indication in the gui as to what someone needs to do to make them work. Effects are indistinguishable from one another in the gui and may have significantly different requirements. I think some progress has been made to address these problems but I don't think they are gone yet.

Right, so the answer to my question seems to be "Only after the Windows build ships with its own Python." I remember we already discussed that and concluded that this is doable, and that the current package even includes its own Python, which only needs to be enabled.
So, this is a Call For Volunteers: Please someone do this! :) Effects will be a major feature if accessible to everyone. As I wrote, I (for example) use them all the time already when working on designs.
The task is to modify the Windows package so that the extensions (at least Python ones) work out of the box. Here's what the user has to do for this currently:

We really need to make this page unnecessary.

Sorry I've disappeared. I am still (slowly) reading the list but I'm currently overseas at Graph Drawing '05. It's a busy program so I really haven't had any time to work on Inkscape.
About the only thing we talked about that is in CVS is the connector context shortcuts. I have a couple of workspaces with the beginnings of other bits and pieces, but nothing I think can be ready for 0.43. In any case, the ellipses bug *is* a problem, so any time I have for Inkscape I would prefer to spend fixing this.
The bug has to do with different co-ordinate systems -- it's broken with some transforms as well. I haven't yet looked further than that at all. I'll try to have a look at it tonight, if it turns out to be hard to fix then I probably can't devote any time to it in the next 48 hours or so. I'll let you know how I go.
Cheers, Michael
