What OS did you convert to? Ubuntu again? Do I understand that the laptop disk was readable, so that you could transfer files to the new machine?
I found my svg files are mere png's and uneditable.
Specifically, do you say that files with the /svg/ extension were not SVG files? Or that they were SVG, but without vector data, perhaps lists of pixels.
If you do not know how to answer, we may need to see an example file.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the extension changed to PNG and the file does not open with Inkscape (win7 64bit) it is an in place upgrade on win vista 32bit. Hdd is seagate expansion 1tb. please find the files attached.
It appears that the attachments got lost. Could you attach a sample file?
