It's already implemented that way! I just verified that it also works in the node tool (although the self-snapping is still missing of course). Please be aware though that the Bezier handle locations are being used to find out whether the node is smooth, and that the node-type attribute is irrelevant. E.g. when changing the type of a node from smooth to cusp, the handles and path do not move. The node will remain smooth and will not be snapped to, until the Bezier handles are being dragged.
