There's been a lot of great changes (image magik stuff, tweaking, dockable dialogs ....) - since there may not be an official release for several months - what about a more or less stable tarball (and maybe ubuntu pkg) - for many users to try out and give feedback - akin to a Ubuntu alpha release.

It's fairly late in the cycle to get things in for Ubuntu, but the cut-off date for Ubuntu beta is this Friday so there is still a little time.
