Yeah, that's what it was. The preferences had a wacked out value.

I'd love to know how that could happen. Right now there's no code that sets this value, only reads it. Perhaps a bug somewhere in the repr system.

For now I will create a function to read a pref value with min and max specified, which will return the default value if what is read is outside the limits.
