After posting on inkscape-user and increasing the sample size, it seems to me that there is a clear consensus in favor of the new style.

Since our development policy is 'patch first, discuss later', I don't think we should make a decision about the defaults until the options were all available for review.

I'm not a core developer (yet...), but I want to encourage you to continue your great work, REGARDLESS of it becoming the default theme later on!
Just think: what would be worse for your ego?
A. People use your icon theme because they like it, NOT because it's (or: because it's NOT...) the default. Screenshots will be made and posted to inkscape.org (and other places) using your work (if nobody else does, I will, but you might have to remember me) and other users start to wonder how they can change their installation of Inkscape to use THAT. And I'm sure you'll get mentioned in the front-page news on inkscape.org.
B. People never use your icon theme because it DOES NOT EXIST.
If you choose A, you can even name your icon theme the "Ben Crowell Icon Theme" :) . I *really* think you should just continue working on it for the fun of it. (And don't forget to post some icons to openclipart.org afterwards :) .)

... you might have to reMIND me (of course ;) )
And: who's to say default themes never change?
