Unless some new showstopper bugs are found, I think pre4 should be OK to release as 0.44. There's one thing to be done before that, however. I really don't like the new About screen. I think it's below the level of quality we've established in past versions. Am I alone in that? Andy said he would work on a new one - is there any progress on that?

I like the concept, but it doesn't feel complete to me. It does seem like we've had more and more visually interesting about screens as time has gone on too. So yeah, I'd either like to see more done to it or something more "engaging" as a whole.

As for the About screen, on 0.44pre4, there seem to be some discrepancies between the authors and translators as listed in About box and names in the AUTHORS and TRANSLATOR files.
Maybe the About box has been left unchanged from 0.43?

I *just* committed a patch tonight covering the about box and the TRANSLATORS file. Not sure about AUTHORS though

Hm, running a diff, I found out that these names are in the AUTHORS file but not in the About box: Marco Scholten

Yep, that was also in the patch and is in SVN now.
Cheers, Colin

A little better, but still clumsy. The version and name are too big. The colors are "default" - grass is boring green, sky is boring blue. The worst part is that the idea of making it "realistic", representing some real world setting, does not work. The objects are too cartoonish and crude, and it's hard to figure out what is depicted.
Why can't you take the original funkymasks file that you showed me some months ago - more abstract, more finely and more inventively chopped by clips, without any grass? And just add some very simple and small name & version to it?
At this point I've started toying with some new ideas -- I think the most promising one so far has been a lady with headphones sitting on a couch and using Inkscape on a tablet PC.
I've attached roughs for three of the compositions I've explored -- a pretty standard view straight-on to the couch (inkscape logo on framed poster on wall behind), a perspective view from the far end of the couch (inkscape logo superimposed in a corner, not part of the actual scene), and an over-the-shoulder view (inkscape logo onscreen).
Stylistically, the goal wouldn't be photorealism, but something just a notch up from cel shading. Just enough stylization to make the vectory feel look deliberate.
Thoughts before I pursue this further?

Interesting. I was thinking natural rather than incandescent lighting. I'll do up a few color studies for comparison.

Hmm. I'm not really keen on the posture/pose.
How about the attached?
(I'm not worrying about colors too much yet, so don't take the colors I used here as strong suggestions)

I agree with you, and I'll add that I can't see the connection with a drawing application, let alone Inkscape. It looks like a splash for some kind of audio mixing app or media player. So I don't see how it could be improved while keeping the same subject.
