Hey All!
Since I was a release warden for 0.46 and will be the one moving forward for 0.47 as well I'd like to touch base.
First, it seems like patches intended for 0.46.1 have died down submission-wise. I plan on beginning to get caught up on Launchpad with regard to those in an effort to move things forward with it. Does anyone have any requests or things to comment on with this?
Second, is it wrong to assume that we won't be shooting for 0.47 this year? I'm definitely not pushing for it. I'd rather see everything get nicely polished... besides I almost never use release versions except for bug testing. ;)
Cheers, Josh

I'd like to see a release this year. Simarlius and verbalshadow and to a smaller extent I started looking at correcting the rasterization of filters in PDF output last night. I think that just this small fix could be useful to a large number of people in a release setting. In addition to all of the fantastic features from GSoC and other contributors 0.47 is beginning to look a bit overdue. But what are our goals? Is there something we really want this next release to do?

I know people might hate me for saying this, but I'd say we could wait for Sep 23, when Adobe CS4 will be announced, and see what they come up with, then decide what low hanging fruits could gain priority to make competition a little more of challenge for Adobe ;-)
IMO, being able to export as much as possible to PDF reliably could be one of very good goals. Anybody still maintaining the features matrix for PDF export?

Our goal is, before all, a stable and usable release. Right now the codebase is VERY destabilized, probably more so than ever before, due to all the refactorings. As I wrote recently, even I sometimes have to go back to older stabler build to do some work. If we really focus on this, we probably can stabilize it enough for releasing within the year, but we have to work hard for that.

Yeah, the destabilized codebase was my main reason for thinking it didn't seem likely for this year. However, it sounds like there is some interest in getting a release out by the holidays. Given that not only refactoring was a goal, but that stability and bug fixing were cited as significant goals as well... if people are really interesting in this timeframe, we should lay out a timeline with dates for when various goals need to be met relatively soon.
Personally I'm less concerned about an end of the year release, but would like to see a release come out in time for the spring linux distro release cut off dates.
Bulia, just curious... is there any hope for the cairo switch during this release cycle (whether the goal is end of the year or spring)? Would anyone be able to assist you with it? Just wondering as it's one of the most beneficial things to refactor in the codebase it would seem.

This is more along the lines of what I meant when I asked the question of what we wanted to accomplish with this release. I assumed that the answer wasn't "provide users with a crashy destabalized release." :-)

But that's exactly what they want, remember: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/264052
:)

The full switch over to cairo is a pretty big change, right? If Bulia has progress toward this goal, is there someway we could get those changes into git or a branch in svn where more than one person could cooperate on it?

We'll see. The work I'm doing right now on PS/PDF export has direct relation to that, as it also uses cairo to render the document, and I think we will be able to reuse much of that code in the screen rendering.

So now a side question based on your response. For people that want to see us move to cairo, would the most helpful thing they could do be to improve/troubleshoot/bugfix our PS/PDF export? Obviously that provides no guarantees that code can be reused or that it would speed up cairofication, but perhaps it would seem more bite-sized and doable for other contributors to submit small fixes and patches. Plus we get better PDF export which is good in itself. :)

Of course - it is always a good idea, cairo or not :)

Exactly :)

+1
When I made a large full color poster printed commercially via PDF recently the two major pains where clipping not working in export, which closed 3 days ago (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/168800) and blur (dropshadow) not exporting.
I think those are major feature which need to "just work" for commercial use.
BTW, the new filter interface and controls (i.e. no filter view) would make dropshadow heavy work much easier :-)
Cheers -Terry

Just to clarify. The blur export works now. The output resolution is not currently obeying the resolution you specify in the export dialog.

Since it sounds like 0.47 needs a stabilization period, it may make sense to focus release efforts just on 0.46.1 for now.
I recall there being a handful of tagged 0.46.1 bugs. I suspect additional digging through the post-0.46.0 changelogs would be useful to identify more patches worth backporting.

I got a sense that Inkscape needed a bit of a breather time to get some underlying reworking done (something to do with getting svg out from under gobject) and possibly other stuff which would make development easier.
My point: Are these structural projects going ahead as planned or are new features and bugs with new features getting in way?

I will look through the changelogs after going through LP to see what I can find... will post back probably over the weekend with a status update on the 0.46.1 stuff.
