I guess you must mean select the text inside of the text object, copy, paste.
Not necessarily, just selecting the text object with selector works just as well.
Note that text is often grouped in the tutorials. So if you select a group, this does not work of course. You need to Ctrl+click so that statusbar says "Text" and then copying will work.
And so it does. The problem here is that there is something fundamental that I don't understand about using the clipboard on Linux. When I used paste in the xterm's edit menu it worked fine.
I uploaded shapes.tar.gz to the patch tracker.
If there are no objections, I will now start on the Advanced tutorial.
I am not a very proficient typist. So if someone would like to do the text work, I would be more than happy to do the graphics. Otherwise I will work through each tutorial in its entirety.

Well, it's not just Linux giving you the problems. Inkscape itself has many issues with the clipboard. This is especially so with text, as much new functionality has been added in the past several months. One problem is that to change things will take a bit of a new direction for how they are implemented internally.
The good news is that once this is done, all sorts of things will work nicer. I've finished most of my research on this (drag-and-drop uses the clipboard mechanism so they're both going to benefit from the same work), and I'm keeping in touch with Richard Hughes on this also.
I've started a wiki page to collect some info and discussion on this: http://www.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ClipboardBehavior
Jump in there and contribute. We'll probably be able to get a start on some fixing this week.

Copying text to clipboard from selector has not been changed for several months and always worked perfectly. Yes it's limited as only text is copied, but this is the most wanted clipboard operation in any case.

Well.. it's not quite 'perfectly'.
Just try mixing working with Emacs, Eclipse, Mozilla and GEdit. Weeee..... Not!
But at least we're not as broken as the worst of those.

Of these I use XEmacs and Firefox. Never had a single problem. Text is copy/pasted in both directions.

Ahhh... that's XEmacs, not GNU Emacs. Copy-n-past is not happy with that.

Bulia, Could you check and see if I did that right? If I did and it doesn't cause a problem I would like to have a go a seperating the graphics out for all of the tutorials in one shot.

Graphics are perfect. There are a couple simple errors in XML (unclosed tags etc) but nothing serious. Except that it's sect1, not sectl :)
I will upload the SVG & HTML soon, after fixing some problems with my stylesheets.
