Speaking of bugs and sodipodi, I noticed this bug was closed in sodipodi:

Perhaps someone who is familiar with the internals of inkscape and sodipodi could quickly port the necessary code over. I added a note to link to the original CR.

The bug hunting is going fairly well, although we could always use more help. A lot of the easier bugs have already been squashed so the ones that are left are going to take some programmer musclepower to knock out.
By 'heavier' what do you mean?
There are a lot of underlying differences folks have implemented that could be showing up in how the app feels, such as changes to underlying data types, conversion to C++, etc. However it'd be a little surprising if they affect the performance in a noticeable way.
