src/widgets/desktop-widget.cpp:
moved zoom selector away from the right edge so it won't get covered by window manager decorations
I don't like this at all. The left end of the statusbar has become very crowded, noisy, and hard to make out. The whole statusbar is very unbalanced.
Also, the rationale given for this change sounds very strange. Window decorations must never cover the window contents. They are always on the outside. If this is not the case for your WM, I think it's the WM that needs fixing, not Inkscape.
Can you please consider reverting this change?

Agreed; I'm not happy with it. But having zoom in that corner wasn't working out either.

And yet they often do. Some WMs and themes put resize handles there.

I tend to avoid WM themes which do this. However, on some platforms (e.g. OS X -- see attached screenshot[1]) people have no choice.

Perhaps you could ask Steve Jobs to please consider reverting the superimposed drag decorations in his WM? :)
Seriously, I've been trying to think of a better alternative layout, but while the alternative I committed is ugly, at least it works for OS X users.
One possible solution which has occurred to me since would be to put the zoom widget back at the end, but add our own resize handle beyond it. There's no harm in one resize handle getting covered by another.
What do you think?

[1] the inset with Inkscape is with an older version of Inkscape, as that's all I had handy on the Mac at the moment. The resize grip is completely covering the letters "elec".

Sure, I will do that when I have a chance :)

I think that might be a decent solution. Can you please code that?
