Website Upgrade Status: Springtime
Dear Developers, board and lurking users,
The live website has just been transitioned. Maren and I have been testing and fixing the next version of the site over on staging for the past two weeks; so I firstly want to offer my profound thanks to Maren for the timely help with bug reports to clean up many rough edges.
With the testing, this doesn't mean we have clean up everything, so don't worry if you see something odd or an error. Report odd things to me or the inkscape-web bug tracker, errors get emailed to me directly so don't worry too much about them.
Now onto features.
* The gallery app has had a lot of work done on it. Some things got patched into live before, but the vast majority of improvements are now there. Mainly the index page that allows one to browse:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/
* There is an alerts system now. You can subscribe to pages so you can get an email when they're edited, to users so you get a message when they upload new art and you may also get a message if someone clicks the send message link in your profile. Allows other users to message people without email addresses being exposed.
* The teams app has been massively improved, although not completed as the end goal is mailing list integration. You can see the three public teams here:
https://inkscape.org/en/teams/
* There is a new releases app which replaces the cms downloads pages. It's being filled in slowly, if you can help write up and link up all the downloads, please get in touch. You can see the start of the data here:
https://inkscape.org/en/release/
And there's many many bugs fixed since last year.
Best Regards, Martin Owens
Hmm...

No that's very unexpected. I must check the media directory location in the backend.

Wasn't much to fix. An issue which wasn't apparent two weeks ago because of the fastly cache on live. I just did a bunch of tests to make sure staging and live aren't stepping on each other.

Hi all,
we're aware of the problem, which affects all pages as far as I can judge.
Bug report is https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape-web/+bug/1539991
No ETA currently, but I think Martin Owens will try to fix this as soon as he can.
Kind regards, Maren

Hi,
Seems like the site is heavily loaded. Could be the configuration. I'm looking into it.

I set some long-ish timeout parameters in nginx. Also removed the nginx uwsgi caches. Restarted nginx. Site works fine now. But may not hold for long.
The nginx, uwsgi parameters need tuning. Nginx may be overworking uwsgi. Also the site is loaded heavily. Load averages above 10.

Thanks ET,
I've told the website to use mysql as a caching server. The poor web server only hat 1GB or ram and was caching to ram leaving not much at all left over.
Also it's running ruby, not sure why. Could you have a look ET and find out what that's about?
The website should be back up now. We'll have to investigate memcached more seriously int he future to handle our website's load.
Best Regards, Martin Owens
Martin,
ruby is used to run mcollectived, a metrics collection tool (agent) from puppet. I think OSUOSL uses it to collect stats and provision clusters. We can turn it off or ask them to.
It's throwing lots of errors: E, [2016-01-31T04:10:38.590809 #1287] ERROR -- : base.rb:29:in `run' Sending registration message failed: execution expired
Memcached, yes, we should. I've done some research on memcached during my experiments with OpenStack. But I've too little experience with Gentoo to try to install it without breaking anything else. I'll probably try it on some dummy setup first.

Also, I think with optimal parameters and configuration settings, we could handle a lot of load to the site. I'll keep looking for tweaks.
