RE: [Inkscape-devel] unicode mapping for symbol fonts
Part of the reason for the gradual approach is that there are a lot of (potentially important) minor tweaks in libnrtype (e.g. the special unicode mapping Lauris added for "symbol fonts" for Lilypond-generated SVG); we want to understand all the code we're replacing so we won't have regrets later.
Perhaps this can explain http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=937347&grou... ?

Possibly. The Win32 code for glyph mapping is totally different from the freetype/xft code, and doesn't appear to do unicode private area fixups, just a direct mapping from unicode codepoints to glyph indices.
I would expect that to at least provide the ability to type low ASCII and have symbols show up though...
By the way, we need to provide some UI means for selecting characters from the Unicode Private Areas.

The crash that I reported on 30 May with bitmap images is occuring more generally. Can someone with Win please confirm:
1. Draw any object with bezier or freehand tool. 2. Select object. 3. Extend object with any control handle to or beyond edge of screen (not the canvas). 4. Inkscape freezes.
This behaviour appears to go back at least to 0.38-1.win32.exe with me. It seems so gross that I feel someone should have found it by now, so it may be in my system alone. That's why I'd like confirmation.

Bulia. The bitmap pattern stuff is great and satisfies a lot of my current requirements. Used in conjunction with a bitmap pattern generator the code is great fun to play with and very useful.
