A long time ago, when Carl proposed the box selection cue (every selected object is enframed by a dashed box), I did not want to make this the default because I found it to be too intrusive. However, since then I grew to like this more than the default selection cue (every selected object has a diamond mark in the top left corner) and I find that I use the box selcue all the time. It's not so intrusive once you get used to it, and it gives a much better idea of the object extent and is nice for aligning things. Also, previously the selcue was only displayed in selector, where the scale/rotation handles make the selcue box a bit redundant; now however the selcue is displayed in most other tools that have no other handles around the selection.
Hence a question: would you agree or disagree if I make bbox selcue the default?
In case you don't know how to change it: Preferences > Tools > Selector, change "Per-object selection cue" from "Mark" (current default) to "Box".

Since it's just about default looks, I don't really care. Personally I haven't used them so far. But: If you want to make it default, it's gotta react faster. When you do a transformation of the shape or move a node, it'll take like half a second until the selcue changes. That make inkscape look slow and that's not what you want to enable as default.
Hence a question: would you agree or disagree if I make bbox selcue
the
default?
It seems a little akward somehow (visually), but is significantly more useful than the current default in my opinion. I guess it's probably because I've always used Illustrator and they do solid light blue selcues (irrelevant), as well as they highlight the outline of objects as you hover over them (and if highlighting an already selected object it just thinkens the highlight). Basically it just highlights which object you _would_ select if you were to click.
Sorry for getting OT, I think the bounding box selcue should probably be made the default. For people new to inkscape especially, it's something that would help the transition from other vector drawing programs, as well as if you have shapes that happen to be lined up in the top left corner.
Back to my OT but related stuff real quick... I didn't notice any existing RFEs for that "hover" feature I described above. So I think I will submit one later after searching a little more in depth to make sure it's not a dupe.

that's kinda cool! something I mentioned on the topic of text on path... I think in general I like it better than the selcue.

I don't see why, but even though I just posted my own reason against making it the default, I don't mind all that much.

Thanx!

I've been using it for the days now, and I switched it back to marks. The reason is that when editing curves with the handles, the selcue really distracted me. I think, I felt kinda "caught" in the box and thought I couldn't make a cure, going further out than I was before, but just further in. Maybe that is related to the slowness, but in any case I found it disturbing.
just, you know, my € 0.02
I am happy with it either way. It does not take long me to get used to whichever is used. Is it possible to change the bounding box color or dash pattern?

Maybe the color of the bounding box should coordinate with the layer that the objects are in. Then, we could have default colors for new layers, and a user could select their own color if they wanted for selection cue per layer.
Thisis similar to how other apps (illustrator) deal with selection colors.
