Hi guys,
I've wondering this all over Gnome since quite a while:
When I detach a toolbar, why wouldn't it be in a resizable toolbox à la gimp, with a window manager frame around it. That would really be cool for a palette as well, when you could attach it to the bottom or right hand side like in Corel or have it as a floating palette as in InDesign.
A detached toolbar with all the buttons in _one_ row is really annoying, because it simply clutters the screen.
I'm sure this is not quite inkscape related, really... everything you'd do would be a workaround, I guess. But maybe you could hint me to where to file a RFE?
Take care!
David

Ok... hint... go to the inkscape website at inkscape.org (there's a link in the menu). Otherwise, here's the URL:

:) no, that is not quite, what I meant
I'm sorry for phrasing this wrongly: Against what project would I file an RFE is what I meant to say.
Thanks anyways!

I imagine you would go to bugzilla.gnome.org and file a bug against gkt+ and possibly against lib egg.
The way toolbars work in GTK is somewhat disappointing, the standard toolbar widgets in other toolkits are a lot more flexible. I too have hoped that the would eventaully be improved and made into resizable containers, so that one could make it reflow to have more rows or columns if you wanted, which if I understand correctly is what you are also talking about.
Sincerely

Hey Alan,
yes, it is. Just wondering: you haven't filed an RFE yet?

No I haven't.
I guess I'd consider this one of those things too patronizingly obvious to file. I mean the toolbar widgets in various Microsoft products are pretty good (and have been for many years) and it I can only assume that those smart enough and modest enough to do the thankless lower level work on GTK are wise enough to use and look at other toolkits and be well aware of how the toolkit could be improved but simply lack the time and resources to do it. Even so, there is probably still some benefit in reporting it.
This report about wrapping seems pretty close to what were are talking about but I'm not entirely sure http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=135287

I just filed a up concerning this: (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163150
You're right about it being related to request 135287. I had seen that as well and am mentioning it in the report. Please add some comments to the report, if you have any!
