patch: merge pdf import via poppler-cairo into native importer
Hello,
as already discussed here is a patch that moves the pdf poppler-cairo importer into the native pdf importer.
Thus it obsoletes the current pdf-input-cairo importer and removes from the source three.
If nobody complains I will go ahead and commit within the next days.
Regards, Adib. --
I pushed my brach to launchpad.

+1, assuming this works I am highly in favor of this feature. I have encountered several situations where the default importer produced garbage but the alternative poppler-cairo importer worked perfectly.
Regards, Krzysztof
Sounds like really nice work... but please check the Gtk+ 3 build before pushing [if you haven't already done so :) ].

ok, done. Tested using the GTK3 config and compiles and works as expected.

Only because it happened with the commit and seems to happen occasionally otherwise, what happens to cause the "po/inkscape.pot" file to get deleted in people's checkouts?

It happens to me that this po/inkscape.pot file getting changed and has a lot of diff.
What is the best way to get the file back (with version history)?

It happens if you run "make clean" from within the source directory.
The easiest way to avoid it is to perform out-of-source builds (good practice in any case because it prevents any automatic changes to your source files). There's some guidance about this on the Inkscape wiki page about compiling from source.
I'll look into the most efficient bzr commands for restoring lost files but I'm sure someone will beat me to it!
Great news about the gtk3 build succeeding BTW :)

If you want to restore a deleted file which is in the last commit:
bzr revert po/inkscape.pot
(It works also when po/inkscape.pot doesn't exist). If the deletion of the file was already committed, use the same command but specify a revision where it exists with -r

Okay, so I have questions now. :)
With the poppler-based import it is converting text to paths (or symbols from what I saw), but it still leaves the "import text as text" active and looking as if it will be how it functions. Is not importing the text as text via Poppler a bug or what we should expect?
What is affected by the poppler import aside from text? I'm partially asking because if the only difference (as far as users are concerned) will really be text, if the above is a feature, should it just be added as an option in that "Text handling" combobox which only has one option as opposed to the checkbox?
Cheers, Josh

The Popper Import is "just" a different conversion and came up as we had and have several Problem with our internal PDF importer. Unfotunatelly Popper creates SVG via the cairo Output and so there is only Limited Control. I have no possibility to specify any options or Parameter. At least the Given SVG is always of reasonable Quality. In an optimal World there should be only One conversion. What about to make all other options as "Not selectable" When the "convert via Popper" is checked?
Adib. Ps: plus. Forgive the upcases, I am writing with my iOS ....

I would say graying out all inapplicable options is definitely a good idea. I guess another question that we need to ask is if the user needs to know they're using poppler. Perhaps the checkbox text could be something more useful for users. I'm not overly fond, but something like "Increased accuracy with fewer editing features" might be a better option.
