If a font (such as Helvetica - quite a common font) has a "Medium" weight then selecting this in the "Text and Font" dialog box correctly changes the preview text but as soon as one clicks on "apply" "medium" is changed to "bold" and the font set accordingly. Similar things happen with "medium oblique" which becomes "bold oblique".
